Christmas markets around Clapham

The Christmas Craft Fair at Battersea Arts Centre on Lavender Hill is on Saturday 2 December, 10am-6pm and features independent designers, makers and artisans, live music, workshops, food and drink and of course Father Christmas.

Over near Wandsworth Common station, The Train Station at 22 Jaggard Way SW12 8SG is hosting a Christmas shopping event on Thursday 7 December 12noon-4pm in support of the Cairn Trust charity. It’s the perfect venue if you want to avoid the Christmas crowds and there’s plenty of parking outside or nearby. Independent businesses will be selling everything from food and drink, fashion, jewellery and home wares.

The Green and Ethical Christmas fayre is back at Holy Trinity church, Clapham Common Northside on Saturday 9 December, 11am-4pm. It’s a lovely traditional family event with Father Christmas and children’s activities plus stalls selling gifts, jewellery, accessories, clothing and artisan food – with an ethically sourced and environmentally friendly focus, so it’s Christmas shopping with a conscience!

The next local SoLo Craft fair is on Sunday 10 December from noon-5pm at Balham Bowls Club on Ramsden Road SW12.  Plenty of hand crafted gifts, live music, workshops and children’s activities plus food and drink. Free entry.

And, of course, don’t forget Clapham’s very own Venn Street market which, in addition to its fabulous foodie stalls, will be selling quality Christmas trees, mistletoe, handmade wreaths, bouquets and fresh flowers.

The Clapham Lights event is on Friday 1 December from 4pm – 7.45pm and organised by This is Clapham in partnership with Clapham Omnibus and local comedian Arthur Smith. Join the lantern parade at 4pm at the paddling pool before heading towards Clapham Common Tube station for live music until 7.45pm

This sounds like fun – we might even have a go ourselves! Learn how to create your own festive wreath this Christmas. Capital Gardens is running festive wreath making workshops at their Neals Nursery garden centre (and other locations) at Heathfield Road, Wandsworth, SW18 3HR.  Lasting 75 minutes, the workshop takes place on Friday 15 December at 1pm. It’s great value too – just £22.50 per person which includes materials, a wreath base and a variety of foliage to choose from. Participants will leave the workshop with their own wreath and a Capital Gardens privilege card with £5 credit on it as well as the chance to enter a competition to win £200 to spend in store. The lights will be switched in Circus West Village at Battersea Power Station on Friday 1 December, 7pm, plus Christmas pop-up shops featuring local businesses and brands are now open every Thursday -Sunday until the end of the year. And there’s more! The Luna Winter Cinema is showing a selection of festive and feel-good films throughout December during the day and evening – indoors in the Circus West Village Hall. Events around Clapham

There’s just about time to sign up for London Santa Dash on Clapham Common on Sunday 3 December at 11am in support of Great Ormond Street hospital. It’s £25 per adult to enter, £15 per child aged 5-15 which includes includes a free Santa suit, a finisher’s medal, a mulled drink and mince pie when you cross the finish line as well as a morning of fun in their Christmassy event village No need to run if you don’t want to – you can dash, jog, scoot or stroll the festive 5k or 10k routes in your free Santa suit.

Winterville is well and true here on Clapham Common and is open until 1 January, noon – 10pm daily. Entry is free except on Friday and Saturday evenings. Featuring Clapham’s first every ice rink you’ll also find street food, film screenings, a fairground, crazy golf, a roller disco plus plenty of entertainment and ticketed shows too. For families with young children we like the sound of Mimi & the mountain dragon written by Michael Morpugo of War Horse fame. This magical and atmospheric tale is brought to life by the Skewbald Theatre – click here for tickets.

A little further afield, Vauxhall Winter Village is back with a pop-up alpine ski village featuring après-ski style food, drink and entertainment. Heated alpine cabin booths are available to hire and the event is undercover, fully lit and heated.

The annual Festive Lights Ride is part of the Clapham calendar and this year it’s on Sunday 17 December at 4pm. It costs just £5 per adult (includes a set of emergency bike lights), free for children (under 16s must be accompanied by an adult). Escorted by Cycle Confident marshalls, the ride starts at The Polygon in Clapham Old Town and heads round Clapham Common through to Brixton Windmill. Expect to see lanterns, lights, musicians, singers and entertainers en route. All level of cyclists welcome.

Fixed restaurant on Northcote Road SW11 has launched its new winter menu and is also offering a Christmas menu for £23.95 per person for 3 courses plus a welcome glass of prosecco. The Christmas set menu is available until 7 January 2018 – must be pre-booked.

If you want more than just any old Christmas tree, The Christmas Forest offers sustainably grown trees at ten sites across London, with a donation from each sale going to the charity Tree Aid. All the trees are freshly cut, come directly from the fields and prices start at £18. You can find them located by the Ascension of the Lord Church, Lavender Hill, Battersea, SW11 5TU (metered parking nearby) or you can buy online.

St Paul’s Opera brings a performance of Handel’s Messiah at St Paul’s Church Rectory Grove Clapham SW4 0DX on Friday 8 December 7-10pm. Audience participation will also be encouraged! Tickets £15 available on the door or online.
