Wandsworth Common & Tooting SW17 restaurants

Wandsworth Common isn’t quite on the doorstep but it does feature some excellent restaurants, including the Michelin-starred Chez Bruce. Tooting boasts some of the best Indian and Pakistani restaurants in London.

CHINESE

Good Earth
11 Bellevue Road, Wandsworth Common, London SW17, T: 020 8682 9230
This well established small chain of Chinese restaurants has a great reputation, if a little expensive. Superb food and exemplary service.

FRENCH

Bellevue Restaurant
218 Trinity Road, Wandsworth Common, London, SW17 7HP, T: 020 8 767 5810
Recently taken over by the popular Gazette group of brasseries.

Chez Bruce (French/Mediterranean)
2, Bellevue Road, Wandsworth Common, London SW17 7EG, T: 020 8672 0114
Excellent French/Mediterranean restaurant – service, food, wine… highly recommended for a special night out. One of the best restaurants in the Clapham/Wandsworth area, and deserving of its Michelin star. You’ll need to book up well in advance for dinner. Overlooks Wandsworth Common.

Le Gothique
John Archer Way, off Windmill Road, Wandsworth Common, London SW18 3SX, T: 020 8870 6567
This is one of those places you should go to at least once if you live in south west London, if only to marvel at the amazing building. It can be a bit hit and miss but it does have a pretty courtyard garden and setting.

INDIAN/SOUTH ASIAN

Apollo Banana Leaf (Sri Lankan)
90 Tooting High Street, SW17 0SF
Sri Lankan food. Recommended by Totally Clapham followers.

Dosa ‘n’ Chutny
68 Tooting High Street, London SW17 0RN, T: 020 8767 9200
A dosa is a long thin crepe which is rolled and stuffed and is traditional in South Indian cooking. The food in fact combines Southern Indian and Sri Lankan cuisine and its vegetarian menu is particularly good. Limited wine menu but reasonably priced and the food is excellent value, although the restaurant itself won’t win any beauty contests – still it’s the food that counts.

Gurkhas Diner (Nepalese)
1 the Boulevard, Balham High Road, Balham London SW17 7BW, T: 020 8675 1188
Restaurant and home delivery/take-away service. Traditional Nepalese cuisine served in a relaxed environment – crisp white tablecloths and white walls. Generally the dishes aren’t as spicy as Indian food but if they aren’t too busy they can prepare dishes to your preference (eg spicy or mild).

Lahore Karahi (Pakistani)
1 Tooting High Street, London SW17 0SN T: 020 8767 2477
Some of the best, most authentic curries can be found in Tooting. Lahore Karahi is reputed to serve some of the best Pakistani food in London but don’t expect luxurious surroundings or fawning service! You can expect to queue but service is usually quick, although we have heard reports of poor service. Naan bread and meat samosas are usually good. No alcohol but you can bring your own.

Masaledar
121 Upper Tooting Road, Tooting, London SW17 7TJ, T: 020 8767 7676
Restaurant and take-away. Food generally good but service inconsistent.

INTERNATIONAL

The Althorp (International)
20 Bellevue Road, Wandsworth Common, SW17 7EB, T: 020 8767 9677
Family friendly restaurant/pub serving international dishes and with a small terrace at the front overlooking Wandsworth Common.

Brinkley’s (International)
35 Bellevue Road, Wandsworth Common, London SW17 7EF, T: 020 8672 5888
{200D1616-4C49-4D8C-B93E-4F48E7F7B1F4}_1[1]
Not necessarily worth a special trip, but a very good local, buzzy restaurant with separate bar area and outside terrace. Service is usually friendly and efficient. Menu includes international favourites ranging from seafood, Thai curry, burgers and pasta.

Meza (Lebanese)
34 Trinity Road, Tooting, Wandsworth, London SW17 7RE, 020 8767 8722
This tiny restaurant (when we say tiny, we mean tiny – there is a handful of tables) comes highly recommended and great value too. Lebanese, tapas style dishes for sharing – they are quite small but the staff will advise how many to order. (Limited wine choice: red or white but it’s cheap and not bad!) Booking is essential.
