CHINESE/JAPANESE/ORIENTAL

Mama Lan (Chinese)
8 The Pavement London SW4 0HY
Cute and cosy restaurant serving Chinese street food. Reasonably priced food (cash only when we went) and no bookings. Perhaps more of a café than a restaurant but none the worse for that!

Mommi
44 – 48 Clapham High Street, SW4 7UR, T: 020 3814 1818
New Japanese/Latin Raw Bar & Grill restaurant to hit Clapham High Street. We recently tried this via a special offer from Time Out and were impressed. Salmon cerviche and tuna sushi full of flavour  – loved the Pisco sour cocktails too! Buzzy atmosphere. Open late with DJ at weekends. Check website for regular offers.

FRENCH

Trinity (French/Modern European)
4 The Polygon, Clapham Old Town, London SW4 0JG, T: 020 7622 7209
Stylish restaurant that’s a bit pricey but worth every penny. You’ll need to book well in advance for weekends.

INDIAN

Clapham Tandoori (Indian)
10 Clapham Common Southside, Clapham, London, SW4 7AA, T: 020 7498 8489
Established in Clapham in 1971, this friendly restaurant serves traditional Indian food and has a loyal following. Take-away and home delivery too.

Maharani (Indian)
117-119 Clapham High Street, Clapham, London, SW4 7TB
Often busy, take-away restaurant.

Zumbura (Indian)
36a Clapham Old Town, SW4 0LB, T: 020 7720 7902
If you prefer ‘modern’ lighter Indian cooking (we do!). The décor is different from traditional Indian restaurants too. Hot food in cool surroundings!

INTERNATIONAL: BURGERS/AMERICAN

Bodean’s (American)
169 Clapham High Street, Clapham SW4 7SS, T: 020 7622 4248
American BBQ style food that hits all the right taste buds. Good spot for watching sport too. Recommended.

Byron (American)
1 The Pavement, London SW4 0HY, T: 020 7622 7070. Branch on Northcote Road SW11
Ok, it’s a chain but the quality is consistently good.

Award winning burger chain.

Haché (American)
153 Clapham High Street, London SW4 7SS, T: 020 7720 7766
Bustling burger joint boasting excellent burgers served in a choice of ciabatta or fresh brioche. Staff efficient and friendly whenever we’ve visited.

Honest Burgers
75 Venn Street Clapham, SW4 0BD, T: 020 3693 9690
Honest Burgers started out with a small unit in Brixton Market in 2011 and now boast 9 outlets. Good, honest burgers is what they do!

Stane Street Syndicate(American)

A large, popular bar/diner right by Clapham Common tube. Tables outside too.

INTERNATIONAL

Café Sol (Mexican)
56 Clapham High Street, Clapham, London SW4 7UL, T: 020 7498 8558
Everything from tacos and margheritas to quesadillas and cheesy nachos in this TexMex restaurant. DJs every Friday and Saturday. Service can be slow and food is a bit hit and miss.

The Jam Tree (International)
13-19 Old Town, Clapham, London SW4 0JT, T: 020 3397 4422
Colonial-inspired food menu in a fun setting with a good selection of wines and cocktails. Popular with a young crowd, busy and lively at weekends. The attractive, walled garden with heaters is open until 9pm.

This looks like a fun place. Rustic, Latin American style décor. We’ve yet to try.

Nando’s (Portuguese)
59-63 High Street, Clapham, London SW4 7TG, T: 020 7622 1475
Fresh chicken and peri-peri sauce make this a fun chain restaurant to take the whole family

No 32 The Old Town (Modern European)
32 The Pavement, Clapham SW4 0JE, T: 020 3535 0910
A new, buzzy bar and restaurant with a fab roof terrace and friendly vibe. It always seems busy when we go past and is popular with a youngish crowd. Good food, stylish décor, friendly staff. DJs at weekends so it can get loud! A good place for a pre/post cinema visit. Recommended.

Rookery, The (Modern European)
69, Clapham Common Southside, Clapham, London SW4 9DA, T: 020 8673 9162
Great in the summer as there is a large outdoor area in front of this New York style restaurant/bar. Small but interesting menu and friendly service. We like this place!

Roti Joupa (Caribbean)
12 Clapham High Street, Clapham, London SW4 7UT, T: 020 7627 8637
There aren’t enough good Caribbean restaurants around in our opinion. Roti Joupa is great but take-away only (although there are a few stools by the window).

Rodizio Brazil Steak House & Bar (Brazilian)
62 Clapham High Street, London SW4 7UL, T: 020 7627 3747
If you love meat, this is the place for you. It’s not fine dining but it’s a lively little place, perhaps a bit scruffy, and service is usually friendly.

Sappho Meze (Greek)
9, Clapham High St, Clapham, London SW4 7TS, T: 020 7498 9009
This family run Greek restaurant is no oil painting but serves traditional Greek food with friendly service.

ITALIAN

Strada (Italian)
102-104 Clapham High Street, Clapham, London SW4 7UL, T: 020 7627 4847
Reasonably priced friendly Italian chain that caters for everyone from families to first dates. We’ve noticed a slight decline in quality of dishes from several Strada branches. Let’s hope they’re not cutting corners.

PIZZA

Eco Pizza & Pasta (Pizza)
162 Clapham High Street, Clapham, London SW4 7UG, T: 020 7978 1108
Cracking pizzas, with an unusual range of toppings (as well as the classics) plus pasta dishes. Recent refurbishment includes free wi-fi, baby changing facilities and an updated menu plus a cool new design (it was pretty cool before!). One of our favourites.

Joe Public Pizza
4 The Pavement, London SW4 0HY
The former toilet at Clapham Common has been converted into a small pizza-style restaurant serving California style pizzas whole or by the slice and early bacon/egg butties. Outside seating. Live music planned.

Pizzeria On The Green (Pizza)
4 Cavendish Parade, Clapham Common South, London SW4 9DW, T: 020 8673 3227
Pizzas often seem to be on ‘half-price special’ here – cheap and cheerful with an outdoor terrace. The pizzas are good!

MIDDLE EASTERN/MOROCCAN/LEBANESE:

Del’Aziz (Middle Eastern / Mediterranean)
55-57, The Pavement Clapham Old Town, London SW4 0JQ T: 020 7498 9128
Del’Aziz offers everything from mezze to merguez sausages and charcuterie to couscous – or just pop in for a coffee and pastry. There’s also a stylish bar and fabulous party venue in the basement.

Argan (Lebanese/Moroccan)
73 Venn Street, Clapham, London SW4 0BD, T:020 7498 3622
Specialising in traditional Moroccan and Lebanese cuisine, the Kasbah also has regular live music and belly dancing. Outdoor tables and chairs at the front of the restaurant.

MODERN BRITISH/EUROPEAN:

Dairy, The (Modern British)
15 The Pavement, Clapham, London SW4 0HY, T: 020 7622 4165
The Dairy gets consistently rave reviews. The menu includes smallish plates – ideal for sharing – a choice of vegetarian, fish or meat dishes (Garden, Sea & Land) and a 7 course tasting menu. The food leans towards modern British but that doesn’t really do it justice. Be brave – the menu is a little bit different, although we’re not quite sure about the stone smeared with butter! Otherwise, the food is delicious.

Four O Nine (Modern European)
409 Clapham Road, Clapham, London SW9 9BT, T: 020 7737 0722
Now Jimmy’s Pop Up restaurants – think apres ski lodge in the winter and bbq in the summer.

Manor Clapham, The
148 Clapham Manor St SW4 6BX, T: 020 7720 4662
A highly acclaimed restaurant from the team behind The Dairy. Details to follow when we’ve visited! Reviews are excellent.

Metro (Modern European)
9a, Clapham Common Southside, Clapham, London SW4 7AA, T: 020 7627 0632
The Metro Garden Restaurant & Bar has been here for ever! The secret to its success is probably its secret garden. Inside is cosy and welcoming and the menu includes British and European favourites but it really comes alive when the weather is warm.

22 North Street Clapham SW4 0HB, T: 020 3583 3702
Good things come in small packages – well, that’s certainly the case at 22 North Street. Food is good quality and excellent value and there’s a private dining room for small groups (8-12) which is entered through a bookcase door! Good place for breakfasts too.

The Windmill on the Common (Modern British/European)
Windmill Drive, Clapham Common, London, SW4 9DE, T: 020 8673 4578
Great steaks here! Sunday lunch particularly busy.

SPANISH

Barsito (Spanish)
57 Venn Street, Clapham SW4 0BD
Cosy (very) tapas restaurant conveniently located opposite Clapham Picturehouse, making it a good spot for post or pre-cinema. Recommended.

Carmen Bar De Tapas (Spanish)
6 Clapham Common Southside, London, SW4 7AA
Good value tapas in an authentic Spanish restaurant right by Clapham Common tube station.

La Rueda (Spanish)
66-68 Clapham High Street, Clapham, London SW4 7UL, T: 020 7627 2173
La Rueda has been here long before Clapham High Street became buzzing with restaurants and bars. Lively atmosphere but probably not the best Spanish food in Clapham.

THAI & VIETNAMESE
Pepper Tree (Thai)
19 Clapham Common Southside, Clapham, London SW4 7AB, T: 020 7622 1758
Reasonably priced Thai restaurant with excellent curries. Good value express lunches too.
