Top Ten Tips for choosing a nursery

Day care nurseries are usually private nurseries (although there are some local authority ones) which take babies from birth (or a few months old). They are aimed at working parents and are open during school holidays too.  There are also many private nurseries which open during term time only and tend to take children from two and half years up until they start school. Many state primary schools have a nursery attached which children attend from the September after they are three years old. It’s worth noting that attendance at a state school nursery doesn’t mean automatic entry into the main school at reception age.

When you are considering a nursery for your toddler or child it’s not always practical to drag them along to look at every nursery. Once you’ve narrowed down your choice, however, it’s a good idea to bring your child along to a visit as Anita, admissions director at Abacus Ark Nursery Schools explains: “Seeing your child in the setting, you will be able to understand how engaged they will be. You will also get a feel for the way in which the nursery practitioners interact with your child.”

  1. Take a look at several nurseries in your area. Practicalities are important – is it on your way to work for example? However, the most important aspect is the quality of care. Visit a range of small, medium and large nurseries and although staff will be on their best behaviour you will still be able to tell how happy the babies and children seem.
  2. Many good nurseries get booked up well in advance. If you think you will be going back to work soon after your baby is born you are advised to start looking at day care nurseries as soon as possible. Even if your child isn’t starting until around two years old, many parents put their child’s name on a waiting list from birth! Morning places are usually more popular than afternoon places.
  3. Ask friends and neighbours for recommendations but remember, what suits someone else’s child doesn’t necessarily suit your child!
  4. First impressions do count. Is the person who greets you welcoming and helpful? Does the nursery look clean, secure (very important) and in good repair?
  5. Is there any outside space (and is it secure), how often do the children go outside? In the case of babies, do they get fresh air every day?
  6. Other important questions to ask for babies: what meals are included, does the nursery supply nappies and formula, where and when do the babies sleep?
  7. What is the settling in process? What happens if your child is taken ill or has an accident?
  8. How many children does the nursery have now and what’s the maximum they take?
  9. What is the notice period?
  10. Have a look at the latest OFSTED report. You can usually find this online.

It’s also worth taking a look at the advice on Mumsnet and Netmums.
