Clapham Cafés

We are spoilt for choice when it comes to cafés in Clapham, Battersea, Balham and surrounding areas. We’ve listed some of our favourites here but get in touch if you know of any other Clapham cafés worth a mention. Check out our listing of dog-friendly Clapham cafés and pubs too – as recommended by Totally Clapham followers. We’ve also posted a blog on our favourite places for breakfast in and around Clapham on our Blog page.

Al Gusto
85 Northcote Road, London SW11 6PJ , T: 020 7228 8782
The best thing about this Battersea café is being able to enjoy a coffee – which is usually quite good – al fresco. Inside is small, but plenty of tables spill out from the small decked area onto the pavement and, when the sun deigns to shine, it is a suntrap in the mornings/lunch-time.

123 St John’s Hill, Battersea, London SW11 1SZ, T: 020 7228 6663
We’d heard a lot about this cosy café but nearly missed it on our trek up St John’s Hill. It was worth the walk though: superb coffee in stylish surroundings. The décor is gun-metal grey teamed with sunshine yellow. It is owned by an Australian and a Cuban which is reflected in the interesting, if limited, menu of sandwiches, breads, salads and cakes.

Black Lab coffee house
18 Clapham Common Southside, London SW4 7AB, T: 020 7738 8441
Small, buzzy Clapham café with good coffee and a great soundtrack on our visit. Paninis were good too!

Breads etcetera
127 Clapham High Street, Clapham, London Sw4 7SS
It’s hard to resist the delicious breads – sourbreads are their speciality – at this artisan bakery and café. Help yourself and toast at your table!

45 Northcote Road, SW11 1NJ, T: 020 7585 2198.
Open Mon-Sat 7am-11pm One of our favourites for coffee which is usually brilliant (on the stronger side) and also for its innovative juices/smoothies. Inside is cosy but there’s extra seating outside with heaters and blankets. Expect to queue at weekends. Also a branch in Wimbledon.

16 Clapham Common Southside, SW4 7AB
Popular café opposite Clapham Common tube serving coffee, sandwiches and weekend brunches. Attractive small walled terrace at the back, cool and friendly vibe! Nice coffee too. They also have a coffee shop on Hildreth Street in Balham and Tooting market.

Dee Light Bakery and Café
14 Ritherdon Road, Balham, London SW17 8QD, T: 020 8672 0250
With its buggy park and small play area, the Dee Light café is, not surprisingly, popular with families. Cakes, bread and pastries are baked on the premises in their bakery – which of course you can buy to take away too. If you are inspired by the delicious products, try one of Dee Light’s cake decorating and baking classes for all ages.

Deli Boutique
32 Webbs Road, Battersea, London, SW11 6SF, T: 020 3674 9344, and 157 St John’s Hill SW11 1TQ, T: 020 7223 9863
More than just a café, Deli Boutique imports delicatessen products from France – cured meats and cheeses – and makes its own jams and chutneys. Baguettes, croissants, and patisserie are made in its own bakery. The St John’s Hill café has a small garden. The Webbs Road branch has a few outside tables at the front.

Fresh Ground London
68 Battersea Rise, near Clapham Junction, SW11 1EQ, T:020 7228 6629
A contemporary, rustic, cosy cafe with outside terrace, Fresh Ground serves artisan coffee from London’s Nude Roastery. It also sells a range of tasty cakes, pastries and brunch items cooked to order.

Gail’s artisan bakery
10 Clapham Old Town SW4 0JY
71 Abbeville Road, Clapham SW4 9JW
64 Northcote Road, London SW11 6QL, T: 020 7924 6330
Gail’s in expanding and has recently opened two branches in Clapham. The coffee is excellent – flavoursome with a smooth froth – and lunch includes a good selection of salads, soups and baguettes plus fabulous cakes. Also sells artisan breads, cakes, pastries.

22 The Pavement, Clapham SW4 0HY
Popular French patisserie/café moments from Clapham Common. Excellent reputation for its pastries and breads made in their own bakery. There are a few tables at the front for watching the world go by.

20 Bedford Hill, Balham, London SW12 9RG, T: 020 8772 9085
This cool Balham café has expanded and is particularly popular for breakfasts at the weekend. It features a small menu – which includes English breakfast – and has a bustling vibe with simple décor of wooden tables and white walls. A few tables outside. Coffee is excellent and the cakes – well, don’t expect to be able to move after eating a slice! Delicious though…

132 Northcote Road, SW11 6QZ, T:020 7228 1414
This Italian deli and café on Battersea’s Northcote Road has a few tables and chairs at the front. Inside is small but attractively designed in orange and brown. Coffee tends to be on the weaker side but there’s a good selection of fresh juices, paninis, salads and cold dishes plus a delicatessen – food is freshly made by a local chef.

Social Pantry
170a Lavender Hill, London, SW11 5TG, T: 020 7924 4066
There’s a friendly vibe at this café where the focus is on seasonal food alongside great coffee and fresh juices. The café space is also available for private hire during the evening.

115 St John’s Hill, Battersea SW11
A cool looking café and we’ve heard great reports. The décor is rustic minimalism – if there is such a thing! Looks like it’s popular with the bearded hipster brigade and it is on our list of places to visit soon – even though we don’t have beards…

63 Northcote Road, London SW11, T; 020 7223 4894
Independent Battersea café, relaxed vibe (busy at weekends), great for breakfast. Outside tables with blankets.

25 The Pavement, Clapham SW4 0JA, T: 020 7627 2176
A great location with a few tables outside. Very good coffee and delicious tarts. We mean really delicious. Recommended. Plus, the Tart team also provides catering – from a large tart for a dinner party up to small weddings and drinks parties.

Tierra Verde
48 Webbs Road, London SW11 6SF, T 020 7228 4465.
This deli specialises in organic Spanish food and also serving excellent coffee and breads/pastries/light lunch. It’s small – there’s one large table in the centre and a few outside – but extremely friendly and good value.
