If you fancy trying somewhere a bit further afield, but not too far from Clapham, the County Arms is worth a visit on warm days or evenings. It has a large garden with plenty of seating and is popular for Sunday roasts/barbecues (booking strongly advised). We’ve tried both and they were good. It’s also close to Wandsworth Common.

The Doodle Bar

A small group of bars that takes beer seriously but in a fun way. For those who could take beer or leave it (apparently there are a few), the wines are pretty good too. Food available throughout the day and we’ve always found the service friendly and welcoming.

The Four Thieves

Located off Lavender Hill in a Victorian music hall that was previously the site of the original Jongleurs comedy club, The Four Thieves is a large, quirky pub adorned with interesting artefacts plus a private dining room and an outside ‘gin yard’ for alfresco drinking in spring/summer. Regular comedy evenings too.

Fu Manchu

Located on the corner of the rather ‘posh’ part of Wandsworth Common (and opposite the station), The Hope is far more down-to-earth than its location might suggest. It’s popular all year round but particularly when it’s warm, with its terrace overlooking the common. It offers reasonable pub food, there’s a regular quiz night and a wine club. A good all-rounder.

The Jam Tree

And now for something completely different…a 1930s’ Parisian-style live music bar/brasserie specialising in gypsy swing music. There’s also a small garden. Free entry before 8pm on many nights. The Plough Bar & Kitchen

Powder Keg Diplomacy

Yes, we know it’s not quite Clapham but The Ship is a great venue for outdoor drinking by the river. It gets very busy on warm days and evenings so get there early to stake out your space.

WC – Wine & Charcuterie
A novel idea for a bar location – a former toilet! Despite its humble beginnings the venue now offers good quality wines and charcuterie (among other things) plus live music. It’s kinda cool…!

The Windmill on the Common

With a fabulous location on Clapham Common, The Windmill comes into its own on warm evenings. There’s plenty of room inside too with leather sofas and open fires. It also offers 29 attractive en-suite bedrooms.

Vagabond Wines

A fairly new, trendy wine bar with outside seating at the front and rear. The focus is on independent wines and there are tasting machines where you order (you purchase a top-up card first) either a sample, small or large glass. It’s a bit confusing the first time you go but the staff are super-friendly and you’ll soon get the hang of it!
